Collections Viewable at First City Museum
First City Museum in Leavenworth, KS, has thousands of small and large museum items. The largest is a toss-up between the 1965 Mack Pumper fire truck and the 8-foot by 12-foot jail cell removed from the former county jail and re-installed within the museum.
Nearly a Dozen Collections
The museum also has some fine collections involving items that are more modest sized -- almost 12 collections now. Below are two of them. And, by the way, the museum needs help with both of those collections, and is reaching out to find volunteers.
Sachse Tool Collection
Progress continues as we aggregate and display the collection of the late John Sachse. We now have his tool collection comprised of more than 1,800 woodworking tools. A tool shed has been constructed inside the museum. Volunteers are needed to sort and display the items within this massive collection.
Curator’s Message Regarding Volunteers
It’s a new year and new effort is being harnessed to improve this fine museum. Many of you in greater Leavenworth are welcome to lend some of your time and talent in whatever capacity you wish. The original plans developed by our Leavenworth Historical Museum Association continue to be implemented, and include numerous approaches that celebrate the histories of the City of Leavenworth and Leavenworth County.
In addition to the collections that need help, there is always a large amount of newspapers, periodicals, and books to be sorted. After sortation, these artifacts will be placed in the new repository room within the Exhibit Hall West.
